The Best Parents' Resource is Mom and Dad

Raising a child is a task, which requires the combined efforts of both parents. There are all types of help available to parents today. Look to yourself as the beginning and the foundation for raising your children. The best parents' resource is really you. This does not mean that you do not need that village to raise a child. Grandparents, family, friends, neighbors can all be important parts in the village that is raising our children today. A healthy relationship between mother and father is essential. You are modeling love and caring. Sharing parenting responsibilities is modeling cooperation and even commitment. At the end of the day, the best parents' resource is still mom and dad. If you are looking for a way to be a great parent to your child, start with yourselves. Here are a few more tips to boost your confidence.

1. First, it is not healthy for one parent to take on all the responsibilities of the family. (There is a difference between the 'family' and the 'household.' The 'family' includes the 'household.') There are single parent households in today's world. Here you can do your best to get the cooperation of another adult to help with these role modeling opportunities. Conversely, if it is best not to take on all the family responsibilities yourself, then also do not leave all the responsibilities to your spouse. The sharing of parental duties is the foundation of a harmonious family. With your spouse, significant other, or cooperative adult, you can list and discuss the distribution of these tasks. Through having a schedule, everything will be attended to, including the nurturing your children.

2. Talk out problems. There will be more harmony at home. You will be taking this opportunity to use once again the best parents' resource, yourselves. If there were a conflict, it would be best to sit down and calmly, rationally, and logically discuss the problem. Once you have arrived at a solution, you will again be using role modeling as a resource to teach conflict resolution and problem solving to your children. (Even though it is best to discuss 'heated' matters away from your children, they truly know about it all the same. They just do not know the whole truth.) Always try to be patient so that you and your spouse will avoid shouting and fighting in front of your children.

3. You can also seek advice from others as a source of information. You are role modeling how to get things done and seek help when and if it is necessary. Another parents' resource may include the children's grandparents or other relatives.

It is time to remember that ultimately, you and your spouse (or other consistent adult) is still the best parents' resource. You know the family goals. You know yourself and your children. With more information and help as needed you will be able to provide the parenting that will be best for your children and the whole family.

Life is full of challenges, and parenting is a big one. An essential Parents' Resource is the parents themselves.
